WSET Level 3 Award in Wines qualification is an advanced wine qualification, suitable for people with good basic knowledge (Level 2 or equivalent); both wine enthusiasts and experienced professionals in the hospitality/wine trade. What will I know after taking this course?
This qualification provides a detailed understanding of grape growing and winemaking. After completing this course, you will be able to assess wines accurately, and use your understanding to confidently explain wine style and quality.
Qualification aims: Holders of the WSET® Level 3 Award in Wines will be able to describe the characteristics of the principal wines of the world and give information on the key factors influencing style, quality and value. Therefore, they will consequently be in a position to advise management, to answer customer queries authoritatively, and to make informed selections of wines in a variety of situations.

Unit 1: Theory: the key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing, winemaking, maturation and bottling
How these key factors influence the key characteristics of the principal still, sparkling and fortified wines of the world. How to apply your understanding to explain wine style and quality.
Unit 2: Tasting: How to taste wines, describe their characteristics and evaluate their quality, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT).
How does the on-line WSET course work?
Tasting tutorial: There is a mandatory in-personal tasting tutorial as part of your course. Your study materials will be handed to you at the tasting tutorial.
Online study: Nine weeks self-guided study to be completed around your schedule. Classes are asynchronous; you can study at any time of the week, but you are expected to keep up on a weekly basis. Your dedicated online tutor is available to answer your questions for the duration of the course. You can participate in online lessons, activities, tests, forums and discussions with other students.
Enhanced features: Videos to help you revise and a virtual workshop on exam theory.
Private study: A minimum of 10 hours a week is needed to pass the course. You may need to allow extra time if English isn’t your native language. It’s important to have a regular study time from the start of the course.
Samples: You will need to taste a minimum of 21 wines (5 of which are included at the tutorial) and receive guidance on what styles to taste.
Assessment: This qualification is regulated by Ofqual. Unit 1 is assessed by a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions and a short-written answer paper. Unit 2 is assessed by a blind tasting of two wines.
Entry requirements: This is an advanced course : candidates are expected to have WSET Level 2 Wines, or have the equivalent knowledge. Candidates should have a good standard of English, for the written exam. Candidates should be over 18 years of age to taste wine.
To use the online learning platform, you should have basic computer literacy. A computer is recommended over a smartphone or tablet, and your system should have these requirements.
Cost, Dates & booking
Cost: €850. This includes on-line tuition, study materials, exam on the appointed date, and 1 wine tasting tutorial. In addition, you need to buy/taste 16 wines which are not included in this price.
Course places are limited, so book early to avoid disappointment. In any case, places must be booked and paid for, at least 10 working days in advance of the start date.
